From among China’s many fine arts organizations, Beijing Art 110 space stands out with its prestigious reputation. For the past 10 years, the man responsible for the space, Mr.Yang Jinnan, has been collecting Chinese contemporary oil painting and advocating for her contemporary art. But beginning in the early 1990s––despite the fact that Chinese contemporary oil painting has already produced a great number of successful artists and enjoyed a great amount of success––advancement in collection building still proves difficult. One aspect to the difficulty is caused by the avant-garde nature and modernity of oil painting, thus making it difficult for it to be accepted by official channels, and therefore bringing a host of intangible pressures and barriers to collectors of contemporary oils. Another hindrance is the lack of funding, fine arts collections or museums and other related collection channels. It was this absence of a Mainland market that caused for the gradual flow of artworks overseas. It was precisely this time, when the collecting of mainland oil painting was at its lowest ebb, did Mr. Yang Jinnan with his eye sensitive to the avant-garde, his courageous insight and distinction, and his sagacious insights, successfully build a collection supporting the likes of artists such as Liu Xiaodong, Shang Yang, Feng Zhengjie, and Xia Xiaowan .

Artist Liu Xiaodong is symbolic of the “New Generation Painters,” Yang Shang is a heroic artist of the Chinese New Wave and Feng Zhengjie is a representative artist of China’s unique school of “Gaudy Art.” Upon examining this collection it is obvious that its legacy is both complex and eminent. Between the years of 1995 and 2007 Yang Jinnan amassed over 10 years of collection experience, a depth of experience that made him well versed in the development and transformations in the contemporary art market. At the same time this resulted in his feeling responsibility for the future promotion and development within the experimental arts, as well as a concern for contemporary Chinese humanities.

Yang Jinnan established Beijing Art 110 Space in 2005. The space is located outside of Beijing in the Songzhuang Village of Tongzhou District. It is situated on 3.18 acres of land and features 600 square meters of exhibition space with 8-meter high ceilings. The facilities are capable of exhibiting all varieties of large-scale sculpture, oil paintings, photography, installation, and video works. The Space not only boasts highest quality facilities and equipment, it is a comprehensive organization that meets international standards and management styles. When Beijing Art 110 was first established, it aimed to become China’s broadest arts institution, hoped to enjoy widespread fame and success in promoting the international visibility of her artists.

Through exhibitions, we hope to introduce and promote the most extraordinary Chinese contemporary artists as well as create a platform for hosting various academic exchange activities. Simultaneously we are promoting the localization of Chinese contemporary art from China and focusing on the search for greater opportunities for international exchange and cooperation in the arts. Beijing Art 110 Space focuses on artist sponsorship, exhibitions, media, collection building, and advocacy as its primary means to achieve these goals. In addition to cooperating with currently renowned artists, the space is continuously searching for the newest and best among young artists. Its ultimate goal and purpose is to explore new directions for contemporary art.

To date, the space has successfully curated and held both solo and group exhibitions for artists such as Liu Xiaodong, Yin Zhaoyang, Feng Zhengjie, Xia Xiaowan, Shen Ling, Ni Jun, Wang Guangle, Song Kun, Ma Yanhong, Dong Lei, He Jiandan, Tian Sheng, Kong Weimeng, Wang Bo, Mi Qing, Fan Jiupeng, Lu Yan, Ma Ke, Sebastian Heiner, Chen Yu, and Yu Chen, etc. Cooperating artists include, Lu Yan, Fan Jiupeng, Xia Xiaowan, Liu Xiaodong, Yin Zhaoyang, Feng Zhengjie, Wang Guangle, Tang Jianying, Liu Baoliang, Xu Xiaonan, Me Ke, Sebastian Heiner, and other artists from China and overseas. We are also currently in the process of launching the careers of a new generation of artists. The mission of our space––in the words of the man who launched it himself––is: “Beijing Art 110 space will begin with its avant-garde positioning, liberal vision, forward-looking field of vision, and pluralistic standards in art to promote and explore the diversified development of contemporary art.”
