1986年研究生畢業(yè)于四川美術學院繪畫系油畫專業(yè),同年留校任教
1993年赴德國卡塞爾大學藝術學院交流訪問，1994年回校
2000年調川音成都美術學院任教,

“畫畫總是讓我累并快樂著，畫美女更是如此”。

劉虹是和四川畫派同時成長起來的女性藝術家�！芭运囆g家”一詞在這時有些錯位，因為對20世紀80年代的劉虹，“女性”僅指天然的性別而無太多的文化學意義。那時的“女性”和“男性”有何區(qū)別?除了隱身于巨大的以男性權力為核心的整體意識形態(tài)中外，“女性”意識是沒有別的出路的。90年代中長期，在世界性的女權主義浪潮的影響下，劉虹開始自覺地以女性方式來思考、創(chuàng)作。以超現(xiàn)實的畫面結構關照女性的內心世界是這一時期作品的顯著特征：作為有教養(yǎng)的女性藝術家，劉虹無法像七、八十年代女性藝術家那樣大膽展示女性的生理特征，并以此強調女性的權利和價值，她所使用的女性裸體，只是女性內心獨白的符號，因而顯得隱晦、冷漠和理性，近幾年，劉虹著意關注消費社會中女性自下而上的生存狀態(tài)，畫風亦隨之變化。廣告式畫法，對女性世俗之美的炫耀，以及由抽象線條所隱喻的理性意識，均暗示著劉虹對時代的困惑、思考與矛盾。
