“Garden of Grins" solo exhibition by Yue Minjun

to be exhibited at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan

The Heydar Aliyev Center has mounted a solo exhibition by the world-famous artist Yue Minjun, with 17 works of art on display from the two series, "Self-Portrait" and "Flowers". The exhibition is organized jointly by the Heydar Aliyev Center and the Tang Contemporary Art.

The best-known exponent of contemporary Chinese art, Yue Minjun first exhibited his works in 1987 and, from the early 1990s, announced his arrival as an artist on the international scene with his series, "Self-Portrait"; the image there so familiar now in both graphics and sculpture. Some believe the artist's smile in his self-portrait to be sly, while others see it as dramatic and sad. In any event, it is an image that leaves no one indifferent.

Yue Minjun’s first participation in the 48th edition of the Venice Biennale, in 1999, paved the way for Chinese artists to figure in all succeeding globally significant biennales. This is some indication of his influence, not only on Chinese art, but on the whole modern art world. In 2007, "Time" magazine included him in its nomination for "2007 People Who Mattered", explaining its choice thus: "If the big-picture question of our time is what to make of China, this is the man to paint it.”

The artist's famous "Flowers" series deals with the consequences of the restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast to real life in that not-so-distant past, the faces portrayed are not covered by medical masks, but by different flowers. "I don't deny reality, I am suspicious of it," is how the artist expresses his attitude to what happened then.

More than 30 solo exhibitions of Yue Minjun’s works have been held in different countries. His works are in the collections of the world’s most famous galleries and museums: the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Chicago Architecture Museum, the François Mitterrand Cultural Centre, Singapore’s Union University Art Museum, the Busan ??Art Museum, the Guangdong Museum of Art and the Shenzhen Art Museum, among others.

Yue Minjun's solo exhibition "Garden of Grins" can be seen at the Heydar Aliyev Center from 8 June to 27 October 2024.
