  The Same

Located at the Beijing Caochangdi art district, 01100001 is a newly launched art space dedicated to the Chinese contemporary art. Its inaugural exhibition The Same features new painting works of six established artists. As early as the 1990s, or even earlier, the six artists have already established their own uniqueness and a signature style in their works. Their current creativity focuses on constructing a cultural value system relevant to themselves within a macro-historical context. Ma Yunfei, Wang Peng and Li Yongbin are interested in the relationship between social reality and image recognition. Zheng Zaidong is concerned with contemporary approaches in expressing traditional atmosphere and the feelings of the ancients. Zhang Yajie explores the qualities of materials closely tied to our quotidian life. And Li Tianyuan restores the image of his relatives and his hometown through memories and imaginations unique to his own artistic language.

The six artists have had in-depth explorations in video art, photography, installation art, performance art and other media too. This has allowed them to explore the fundamentals of visual expressions in painting. Their long-term effort is not to discover and sustain their own stylistic models, but, starting from each of their personal experience and maintaining a steadfast exploration of their artistic concepts, they confront their respective problems by applying an already mature language and constantly reflecting on the medium of painting. Such practice allows both the expression and impression of their work to appear refined, as well as natural and profound, which differentiate them from superficial unconventional action.

From a macro-historical point of view, more than differences, there are coherence in all artworks. These similarities and resemblances embody the essence of art and the characteristics of times. Once the uniqueness of the artwork is identified and experienced, learning about the organic relationships among different artworks and their similar points of departure deepen the viewers’ understanding of the artworks. It is necessary to examine the actual context, art ecology, historical position, culture, as well as, other complex aspects. It is still necessary to synthesize all of these aspects when analyzing and viewing artworks in order to understand the innovation in art. In our time, tradition and history are both positioned for reassessment and criticism, and no sort of “power” could isolate history and tradition into a completely closed system. Similarly, only in an open platform could people comment on artistic creativity and cultural trends of their own time.
